St. Johns Riverkeeper

Your help is urgently needed!

The Georgia-Pacific paper company, which is located on the St. Johns River in Palatka, wants to install a 5-mile long pipe so the mill can pump its polluted wastewater directly into the St. Johns River.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is poised to grant permission for installation of this pipe any day, without even holding a public hearing to let residents know what they have planned. The pipe could deliver up to 60 million gallons of waste from the mill to the river every day. The wastewater contains dioxin, ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, odors and many other pollutants. It will create a plume that discolors a long stretch of the river, right in an area where many people fish.

This pollution will cause even more toxic algal blooms in the St. Johns, will lower oxygen in the water (which causes fish kills), and will contaminate the fish with toxic chemicals like dioxin.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? PLENTY!

You can contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and tell them to deny Georgia-Pacific’s request to build this pipeline so it can dump its paper mill wastes in your fishing waters.

Here is a sample of what a letter might say:

I am writing about application number SAJ-1994-03432 (IP-TLH).

I strongly object to the proposed permit that would allow Georgia-Pacific to place a pipe in the St. Johns River so that it can discharge up to 60 million gallons per day of paper mill wastes. This river is very important to me and my community, and it is already under stress. Additional pollution is unacceptable.

The Corps of Engineers should hold a public hearing before it makes a decision as important as this one. Please schedule a public hearing, and inform me when it is scheduled so that I can attend.

Sincerely,
  Your Name
